Candle Lighting Ceremony

As the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease continues to climb, communities across the country will light “candles of care” on November 8 to remember those who have passed from the brain disorder and others living with it,  as part of an annual event sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA).

AFA’s  National Commemorative Candle Lighting occurs during National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month.

A candle lighting ceremony will be held on November 8 at Oak Crest 5980 Eastern SE beginning at 6pm.   The ceremony will feature a candle lighting, a reading of names in memory and recognition, music from the Young Adults of Kentwood Community Church, a reading of a proclamation from the Kentwood Mayor, several speakers, and some light refreshments as well.

“We hope to bring the community together in prayer and fellowship as they share stories and resources for dealing with this difficult disease,” said Al Harraman, Administrator of Oak  Crest of Kentwood.  “We see how Alzheimer’s affects not only the person who has the disease, but the rest of the family as well.”

Alzheimer’s disease, which results in the loss of memory and other intellectual functions, currently affects an estimated five million Americans, including one in ten persons aged 65 and older.  The number is expected to triple by mid-century as the baby boomers age.

The National Commemorative Candle Lighting is one of several initiatives during National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month.

We enjoyed having our elders and their families and approximately 30 of our neighbors join us for the car display, ice cream, hot dogs, salads and fruit. It was a great evening with Art Scheid providing entertainment on his keyboard throughout the evening." Al Harraman, Administrator
